MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office says a fugitive from Maryland led them along with other law enforcement on a high-speed chase that drove through a residential area in Martinsburg. In his vehicle at the time of the chase were three passengers.
The sheriff’s office released information Tuesday about the Saturday chase.
The car chase began within the city limits of Martinsburg.
Deputies said they located a vehicle driven by Floyd Craig, 33, of Baltimore, and attempted a traffic stop while the vehicle was traveling westbound on Apple Harvest Drive.
Craig initially stopped, but as the deputy got out of her patrol vehicle, the driver, identified as Craig, fled the traffic stop and drove into oncoming traffic onto Winchester Avenue.
Craig then continued to drive “at a high rate of speed through a residential area” and blew through multiple stop signs.
He eventually turned onto Shenandoah Street, drove onto a residential yard and through the rocks along the railroad tracks where he reportedly lost control of his Jeep and crashed into a cluster of trees.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office tells The Panhandle News Network Craig then got out of the Jeep patriot and ran on foot toward Apple Harvest Drive.
Martinsburg Police Department officers took up the chase, apprehending the suspect as he attempted to climb a fence behind the Apple Harvest Sheetz.
Investigators said inside the Jeep they found drug paraphernalia and reported that Craig threw a Glock firearm and a clear bag that contained capsules out of that vehicle. The gun was located inside a fanny pack by a member of the US Marshal’s Service.
Investigators obtained search warrants for a hotel room at a local motel as well as a home on Bernice Avenue.
Police report finding ammunition, cash, and scales at the hotel room and a firearm at the home.
Craig faces a number of charges including being a fugitive from justice, being a prohibited person with a firearm, malicious assault, wanton endangerment, fleeing police and drug possession. His charges in Maryland include assault.
