Monroe County Schools takes precautions after reported rash

UNION, W.Va. — Monroe County Schools canceled all after-school activities for Wednesday as a precaution following reports of bacterial skin infections in surrounding school communities and athletic programs.

The district says the cancellation will allow crews to clean and disinfect athletic facilities, locker rooms and shared equipment.

Officials emphasize the move does not necessarily indicate a confirmed outbreak in Monroe County Schools. Potential cases are still being reviewed.

Parents are encouraged to check children for redness, swelling, painful bumps, sores or drainage and seek medical evaluation for concerning symptoms.

Students with actively draining lesions cannot participate in athletics.

The district says returning to sports depends on meeting health department requirements.

Three schools in Wyoming County were closed for most of last week after the spread of a staph infection. Greenbrier County Schools also sent a message to its families a few days ago encouraging the washing of hands and cleaning of surfaces.
